About Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya (SSDN) has established itself as a beacon of excellence in ophthalmic care and research since its inception. From the very beginning, the institution has been committed to delivering world-class eye care services to the people of Northeast India. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most trusted eye hospitals in the country.

The services of the institute were dedicated to the nation on 24th November 1995 by the then Prime Minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of a remarkable legacy in ophthalmology. The institution’s stature was further elevated with the visit of the former President of India, His Excellency, Shri K. R. Narayanan, on 9th November 1998, reinforcing its commitment to excellence.

Through divine grace, untiring human effort, and the visionary leadership of its Founding President, Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee, SSDN has set a benchmark for eye care services and community outreach in Northeast India. What began as a mission to address the critical need for specialized ophthalmic care in the region has evolved into a Center of Excellence, offering cutting-edge treatments, research opportunities, and an extensive community outreach program that has adopted 2,114 villages across Assam.

As a non-profit community hospital, SSDN has consistently prioritized affordable and accessible eye care, ensuring that the most vulnerable sections of society receive high-quality treatment. Its relentless efforts in vision restoration and blindness prevention have garnered global recognition from prestigious organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), and numerous other international bodies of repute.

SSDN’s commitment to excellence was formally acknowledged in 2004 when Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India, officially declared it a ‘Center of Excellence.’ This recognition underscored its dedication to advancing ophthalmic science and patient care. The visit of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the then President of India, further enriched the institution’s legacy, as he deeply appreciated its values, ethics, and unwavering service to the community.

Today, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya stands as not only a premier eye hospital but also a landmark in ophthalmic care, education, and research in South East Asia. It continues to expand its reach, embracing new technologies, fostering medical innovation, and upholding its mission to eliminate preventable blindness.

The journey of SSDN is far from over. With a passionate team of skilled professionals, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and an unwavering commitment to serving humanity, the institution remains dedicated to bringing light to lives, one vision at a time.
